Technical Details
Be aware that Unreal 5 now has Lumen enabled by default. We still support a more game-ready pipeline, and you should disable this feature in your project settings to get results like our screenshots for 5.0. We added support for Lumen and Nanite with version 5.1+. Could look a little different than the original. You can check DEMO to see the differences.

Materials have just a few base materials to control the whole map in one place. It will be useful to merge materials with your one project if needed. To save memory, we used roughness from albedo and used that extra memory space to better resolution of other textures.

Texture Quality ; Impressive. mostof the textures comes with 4k res . If you want to get scene renders they are amazing! If you need to use it in real time maybe in some cases you may redce the resolutions and even you set the bias to 2 , they are still realistic and amazing.
Models. They are amazing. The modular aproach allows you build your custom architectural buildins, ruins zoneor intersting hidden places. The balanced poligons are good and ready for games.
Levels ; the premade levels are simply amazing too. They did a great work there. And the level has a basic optimisation and it works well.
Maybe it might be good to replace the particles with a niagara versions which are placed in the other packages.
Anc it might be good to have some big rocks in this package too. 2-3 big rocks from other products might be amazing.

Good pack but……
The pack is nice, but I do see some things I wish I knew before spending this much money.
- Not all sides of the objects are closed up. This means you cannot just place anything how you want as it will have an invisible side you see right through….
- Some textures are super detailed and others are super washed out
Honestly would give the pack 5 stars if it didn’t have invisible sides. It becomes a real headache to be limited on something you buy when you are restricted to how you place it.

About your problem hard to say what exactly you mean. I just opened a project and for me, everything looks like it should. Maybe 2-3 objects could have a little more cap surface. But maybe I’m too used to photogrammetry assets :)
Basically, we don’t want to interfere with nature’s detail on beautiful scans too much. Just clean all the unnecessary parts of the ground, optimize, and bake. Finally, adjustments(bending, small caps, etc) are to be useful at the level of creation. For more than 90% of the object they will land in the ground and they don’t need geometry rendering below the surface. That means with a proper placing we save geometry, textures, and lightmap size. For us pretty worth it :)
And the buildings and underground structures are pretty much the same. We have some pre-buildings and they can be modified as you wish. Please check the overview map where you should have buildings as separate meshes and not only blueprints :) Very often underground structures don’t need outside walls at all. Then saving all of the memory helps a lot. Unless it was very important in a project on consoles and PC I used to work on.
And as the nanite and lumen come it starts to be clear we should use an overlapping object(like ground assets) to blend each other and at the same time we need to take care it will not have too many unnecessary overlaps. Epic with their presentations talks about a few times how they optimize megascans to gain a lot more performance.
I could understand sometimes it will be just much easier just scatter all the things and be glad about the results :) I like it very much! But when we come to game development we are trying to make it more proper :)
I hope it somehow explains a few of your concerns. Would be great if you could update your thought about the package and demo as a whole and change your score :) but if you still don’t think it fits your particular project we can back your money :)

I’m not sure which should I commend more, the assets themself or the env artists putting them together.
All assets are game ready, extremly lightweight for the detail they bring, and the demo scenes really showcase the different use case scenarios for them!

Once again, I’ve only tried the demo map in VR…but WOW…it’s spot on for quality. This will definitely be put to good use in my project. Keep up the AAA quality!!! Even though UE5.1 has brought Lumen & Nanite to VR…I still find the performance of Nanite & Lumen in VR (in a large open world) difficult to keep performance up to VR standards (even with a 13900k + 3090)…though this is not relating to this asset. Just info I have experienced for VR…for those who might be thinking that way.

I am hoping for an unreal 5 updated version that works well with Lumen. The Shadowy parts are dark. other lighting modes do work well. The assets are MANY and if used right can make for some fantastic scenes for both film and Games.

Don’t worry about Lumen and Nanite version. We are on the good way to having it. Some things will change but I hope you will have a lot of fun with the new features. And you will be satisfied even more! :)
For now, if you change by yourself to Nanite and Lumen remember that it will not work simply with the standard setup. That’s why a lot of projects could look pretty dark(especially indoors). We are trying to properly manage it in the next Update. If any problems let us know at support@scansfactory.com
Not game ready, not optimized
While I realize these are photogrammetry assets, for the price & the claims of them being game-ready and optimized, and the claims of modularity/building your own levels, I expected much better.
Many of the meshes in their example levels are sunk feet into the ground since they have horrible uneven bottoms which were never cleaned up. Building a level out of these assets is a complete pain.
Additionally, the polycount is unnecessarily high for how simple the actual mesh is.
They’re beautiful assets, but I won’t be using them and am disappointed in the purchase.

Sad to hear that it’s missing your expectations. I will try to explain all your concerns.
All the meshes are presented on overview screens for everyone. We believe this is the best place to find out if photogrammetry resources are right for your needs. Some of them have these bottoms you mention mainly to help with blending well with the landscape. It’s really handy with assets like roots, trunks, stumps, etc.
Polycount probably mostly depends on the project you have. Our packages are designed for quality games and films. Assets can also be used in more demanding projects, but require some optimizations (change min. lods and hlods help a lot).
Our goal has been the same for years – Demo map must run at around 70-90 FPS in full HD, shipping, with default settings on GTX 1070. Other examples:
GTX 770 – 30-50 FPS
GTX 2080 – 80-100 FPS
GTX 3070 – 130-200 FPS
Of course, that is without any scalability changes which could be very useful to adjust graphic settings for older graphic cards.
That’s how we understand that it’s game-ready. We are not able to create a package for every project and for every platform. We believe our approach is somewhere in the middle of current trends. Of course, many Unreal Engine tools can help you do even more FPS :)

Well done. Excellent learning tool. You have created a complete immersive environment. Reminds me of the old Zombie maps, interesting, complete, has great atmosphere. Drop in game play and it would make an interesting playable zombie map. My vote is for an additional chapel map with new natural lighting. Hoping you will take pity on us and give us all three. Would like to also see expansion with additional dungeons and an RTX example. Well done.

Ruined Crypt
Does the Ruined Crypt share meshes with this asset? Basically I’m trying to avoid purchasing duplicate assets. Since I own this one I wouldn’t need to purchase the other or does it have different meshes?

trees just show rectangles – on my mac in 5.21 – please help
Hallo ! The product is amazing. I opened it one year ago in UE5 and all worked fine, but now, I opened again in 5.21 and all leaves just show as rectangles. I am not so familiar with UE and I guess the solution is only a few clicks away, but I do not find a solution myself at this point… I am working on a mac and would be so happy if you can help me out here. I would say material on leaves is not compiling properly. We will check if that is on our side or because of Mac somehow.
Please check if you downloaded a new, fresh version dedicated to version 5.2. It’s different that do migration by yourself locally because we prepared different setup for different UE versions.

The light is not rendering correctly
First of all, I LOVE how everything looks! I just run into an issue when rendering in the movie render queue. The level itself, the cinema cut and cameras look ok, but when I render, the final result is all dark and I can only see what is inside the BP_fog (not the exponentialheigh fog). I tried with and without lumen settings, amoung other things, but after several hours, I can’t manage to figure out what is wrong.
This only happens in “RuinedCrypt_01”, in the other one “RuinedCrypt_03” it renders correctly.
Any ideas?

About the problem for sure RuinCrypt_01 is using sublevels. You need to make sure you have “Always loaded” at least one lighting scenario. Maybe there is some problem with rendering. Also, I would check the level persistent blueprint – what is loading there and delete all unnecessary widgets(fade, menu, etc.)

Latest version only has new crypt
Is there a new demo map with the full view not just the crypt? I was hoping to get the entire updated map/level for some cinematics not just a small piece with the latest stuff. I see v1 has it, but I wasn’t sure if that had all the updates.

Just bought it. Would love to have options where the arches are less gothic / european
I played the demo. Bought it. I’m hoping to change the arches where they are less gothic / European. Basically less pointy. I’m hoping to add churches that look like their from America between 1800 and 1880.

Interesting question indeed! :) I would say our assets are modular but not always closed. It means In many cases it should be without any problem with walls and columns in the proper place. It could be a problem if you will be too crazy about that dungeons. There are also more unique assets like the ceiling of the rounded crypt – it has modules and could be arrange in a very different way but probably such a procedural generator could have problems here.

How long will your sale price last?

Hi, we can’t officially say when the sale will start or end – these are the rules introduced by Epic. But as you can read in the Marketplace Guidelines, the sale duration is a maximum of 14 days. And “Products included in an individual sale cannot go on sale again until 30 days after the first sale ends”. So, as you can see, 3 weeks may turn out to be too long and the sale will probably end.

Lighting Build
First off I would just like to say that this map is one of the most impressive works of art I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I am running to an issue when I attempt to build the level. I click build then build all levels however, It is telling me that the sublevel; nightlight (which I love) and other sublevels will not have a lighting build and if I build what I build can be invalidated. I am not familar with this, anyway to build all the levels at once?

That warning is normal behavior when you are using the lighting scenarios feature. Unfortunately, you should build level 2 times to have the DAY and NIGHT versions rebuilt fully. Lighting scenarios could be a great feature but have some limitations. From what we see Epic probably will abandon that solution when the lumen is on the horizon :)

Virtual textures
Am i going to have to use my own materials and re-do everything to run them in VT or do you have this enabled. by 2023 you should id think. Yeah VT is extremely powerful especially with photoscanned assets. Ill give it a go, usually master materials dont like being converted over to VT if they use alot of blending functions or opacity mask stuff. Its mainly because when we are building photorealistic worlds with alot of megascans and a workflow similiar to valley of the ancients. There simply is not enough Vram on the table. The added benefit of nanite not needing nearly as many texture samples as the old ways means, even though we have doubled our lookups with proper materials the shader complexity is still cheaper in the long run, and basically costing nothing in terms of Vram, For this reason, Quixels gives us two sets of every master material to tweek what we want VT and what we dont to get the fine balance later on.

Hard to say. That feature was soo long in alpha and beta stages then I almost forgot it :) For sure interesting idea. From what I saw with 5.1 there is support for virtual texture lightmaps too.
For now, the project does not support this feature but in the nearest future, it could. From what I know not many of our customers use it(probably you first ask about it). And I believe it’s still not by default in the engine. For sure if Unreal makes it by default we will consider it.
And in the end, it should be pretty easy to change it on all textures at once. We have 5-7 base materials for packages where you should easily fix base material to virtual textures inputs :)

Enclosing all sides?
Do you ever plan to update the pack so that all objects have a closed side to prevent restricted placement? Currently almost all assets have an invisible side meaning you either have to double up or you become very restricted for the money you pay to place thing in the scene.

Do you mean a “waterproof” kind of asset? Photogrammetry especially is not great to make that kind of mesh. And that includes Megascans/Epic assets pipeline too.
Not sure how you are placing those assets but for me, it was a lot of fun, satisfying and rewarding work. Trunk, roots, logs, gravels etc. . I love to put such detailed assets and place them carefully around the world to give that realistic look <3 Or at least strive for it :)

We just ended a pretty big update with lumen and nanite for our Lost Temple Cave. We will announce it soon when we will be sure everything is ok.
For Medieval Ruins, we already started the process with a few other improvements. But optimistically it will be a few weeks at least. Sorry, can’t be more specific because we want to do it well. Don’t know if you can wait.

How to use update?

I believe Launcher will download the package again and you could add this as a new package to your project. Then you should consolidate assets you need.
There were not many changes in main structure of project and it should be pretty easy. I believe there were some scripts for it on marketplace. Most of the new map-updates was made on new level or new sublevel dedicated to it. Depends on what you need :)

Hi, our 3D models are based on photogrammetry scans which means very detailed meshes and textures. Also, the demo scene hasn’t been designed for mobiles. So we don’t recommend our scene for mobile devices without deep optimization.

1- Are foliage(bushes, small vegetation) moving like megascan foliage ?

1 – not exactly, we have our system, simpler but very optimal at the same time. In the “Medieval Fantasy Ruins” documentation (link at the bottom of the page) you can read a little more about how it works and look. Our vegetation is also interactive – it reacts to the player. If you want, we can make some extra videos for that one.
2 – we didn’t think about it, there are many artists on the Marketplace specializing in foliage and for us, it was only an addition to complement the scene. But how knows :)

UE5.0 support ?
Really love the env and the atmosphere. Will you update for UE5 by using lumen and high poly assets version with nanite ? Thanks

We would love to do such support but for now hard to say if there is what most of our customers expect. UE5 still have problems that need to be addressed. No support for landscape tesselation, not great performance with lumen… I’m not sure how many developers will just jump into UE5 and use it with game development. It’s hard to judge. For us, it will be a process :)
But of course, there will be standard support for UE5 and probably with time, we will add support for features seems to work.
Thanks for the question! For sure we will have contact with our customers about expectations. If there will be enough voices we could even transfer fully to UE5 :) We keep an eye on it! :)
Are those 4096 textures true 4096 up close?
I have purchased photogametry packages before and the textures were blurry up close, also textures for photogametry are always scattered, have you somehow converted the textures over to a usable uv map?

Working with MAC OS
The description says it would probably work but hasn’t been tested. I tried it with my Mac and it doesn’t load into my project. My question is am I doing something wrong or if it doesn’t work can I get a refund? I bought it because it looked so good I was willing to take a chance and give it a try do to the description hinting it would. If I had known it would not work I wouldn’t have purchased.

Thanks for the contact. We added this information because the project is pretty simple and we assume it should work on any devices. Unfortunately, we have no access to MAC – that is why we did not check MAC official support. But on another hand, we know that some people run our packages on MAC computer and we added this description “should work”.
If you have some time please write to us with a description of what happened exactly – maybe we could help you and other MAC users. If not please refund and we will accept it. Sorry for the trouble – we will change the description until we will sure it will work.

Love This…. Looks Amazing
I was hoping to pick this up during the sale. Please consider a sale price in the future. It think this is your best work yet. I own several of your other offerings and they are fantastic. Question, I know the fire guide is on a spline, but it appears to move to the next spline point, or a predefined point, upon overlap with the character. Is that true? Or is this just cinematic? Also, Is there a BP with variables to set for the fire guide, such as distance from Character, or delay after character overlap, to time the move to the next point?

It’s just over 2 months from the premiere, but of course, this package will also be on sale :)
And about questions:
- Fireguide is on spline. You can control where it should stop and wait for player. When the player will overlap with box volume within BP – fireguide will follow next spline. Of course you can edit this box volume how you want and control distance from player:)
- There is option to control speed of fireguide. We don’t need to have any delay but it should be pretty easy to add this in the blueprint.

The scene will work around 70-90 FPS on full HD and 1070 graphic cards. Of course, there are many possibilities to make it even much higher by simply working with level-optimizing(depends on the project you want to make).

If you ask about presentation and flythrough video music – that it’s not part of the content. We use it just for presentation. Please write to use if you need them :)
If you ask about walkthrough video – of course, any ambient, storm, fires sounds etc. are included.

I confirm that we have included a demo map as always. Everything you see in the video is in the package. We will publish the walkthrough in the next few days and it should be clear :)
Weather effects like falling leaves, two light scenarios, fog plans, good rays, simple storm and sounds are also included :)
